LISTEN TO ME SING
Directed by Isabel Garrett
Animation | 12 minutes
A miserable hotel performer finds her most primal self when she falls in love with a walrus.
Our protagonist, Sophie, expresses herself by throat singing, so the director and I were in discussions from script stage about tone. We chose a style of throat singing that expressed raw power and primal instincts to not only mimic the walrus she finds on her journey, but also because singing took Sophie to her own constructed world as a means of freedom to escape her horrible reality.
The score was infused with other primal instruments such as the frame drum, didgeridoo and bone flutes to create something mesmerising and hypnotic, whilst being supported by warped sounds both organic and synthetic.
